Run Club Kit: What to Carry (Without Holding Anything)

Run Club Kit: What to Carry (Without Holding Anything)

Run clubs became the social event of the week in half the cities in Europe. Which means a lot of people running who are not really runners yet, carrying a phone that was never designed to be carried at pace.

Here is what works.

The phone question

Three options, all with honest trade-offs:

Where Good Bad
In your hand always reachable ruins your arm swing, and you will drop it eventually
Armband secure slides down as you sweat, hard to read on the move
Crossbody strap hands free, easy to lift and read needs the strap short or it swings

If you go with a crossbody phone strap, wear it short — high on the chest rather than at the hip. At hip length it swings with every stride and that gets annoying by kilometre two. High and tight, it barely moves.

Earphones: the honest case for wired

Wireless earbuds are the default and they are excellent right up until one falls out. On a run that means stopping, turning round, and searching a pavement in the dark. It happens to everyone eventually.

Wired Apple earphones cannot be lost one at a time, never need charging before a run, and stay connected in a crowd of forty people all streaming at once — which is a real problem at a busy run club start line.

If you prefer wireless, an AirPods strap connects the two buds so a dropped one hangs at your collar instead of rolling into a drain. We covered this in the AirPods strap guide.

Your watch, and the strap on it

The silicone band your Apple Watch came with is fine for the run and unpleasant for the two hours afterwards, because it holds sweat against the skin. A woven band breathes and dries.

What most people settle on: sport band for the run, woven band for the rest of the day. Swapping takes about five seconds — slide out from the side, not downward.

Run club etiquette nobody tells you

  • Turn up ten minutes early. Groups split by pace, and the split happens before the start, not after.
  • One earphone out. Traffic, and also the point of a run club is that you talk to people.
  • Do not race the first kilometre. Everyone goes out fast in a group and regrets it.
  • Stay for the coffee. That is the actual club.

The short version

Phone on a short crossbody strap, earphones you cannot lose one of, and a watch band that breathes. Then stop thinking about kit and just turn up.
