Handmade Apple Watch Bands: Sizing, Fit and Styling

Handmade Apple Watch Bands: Sizing, Fit and Styling

Almost everyone buys the same silicone sport band their watch came with, wears it for two years, and never thinks about it again. Which is strange, because the band is most of what anyone actually sees.

Here is what to check before you swap it, and what a handmade woven band changes.

First: which case size do you have?

Apple Watch bands are not sold by model, they are sold by case size — and Apple has only ever used two band widths. Every band fits into one of two groups:

Group Case sizes
Smaller 38 mm, 40 mm, 41 mm
Larger 42 mm, 44 mm, 45 mm, 46 mm, 49 mm

A band made for one group will not click into the other. The good news is that within a group everything is interchangeable, and it has stayed that way across generations — a band bought for a Series 4 fits a current watch in the same group.

How to find your size without the box

On the watch: open Settings → General → About and read the Model line, or check the same screen in the Watch app on your iPhone. If the box is long gone and the screen is cracked, measure the case height (top to bottom, not the screen) — it lands close to the number in the name.

Fitting a new band

  1. Lay the watch face down on a cloth so the back does not scratch.
  2. Press and hold the band release button on the back.
  3. Slide the old band sideways out of the channel — it goes out to the side, not down.
  4. Slide the new band in from the same side until it clicks.
  5. Tug it gently. A properly seated band does not move at all.

If it will not slide, you are probably not holding the release button all the way in. It needs steady pressure, not force on the band.

What a woven band changes

Our handmade Apple Watch bands are woven with embroidery detail rather than moulded, and that changes three practical things:

  • It breathes. Silicone traps heat and sweat against the wrist. A woven band does not.
  • It reads as jewellery, not as sportswear. The same watch stops looking like gym equipment when the band is textured and coloured.
  • It layers. A woven band sits happily next to a beaded bracelet on the same wrist, which a chunky sport band never quite does.

Caring for it

Treat it like a bracelet rather than like a watch part. Take it off before swimming, hand wash in cool water if it needs it, and let it dry flat away from a radiator. If you work out daily, keep the original sport band for the gym and the woven band for everything else — that is the split most people end up at anyway.

Styling: three combinations that work

  • One statement, one quiet. A bold band with a plain watch face, or a plain band with a busy face. Both loud at once is where it goes wrong.
  • Match the metal, not the outfit. Pick a band whose colour sits well against your case finish — the case is the constant, the outfit is not.
  • Layer on the same wrist. Watch plus one or two thin bracelets, all in the same colour family. Our knitted bracelets are sized for this.

The short version

Check whether you are in the 38/40/41 mm group or the 42/44/45/46/49 mm group, and everything within that group fits. Swap the band from the side, not downward. A woven band breathes better and layers better than silicone.
